After four rounds of voting, Calgary secured the 24th World Petroleum Congress over other cities of consideration including Baku (Azerbaijan), Astana (Kazakhstan), Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and Argentina (Buenos Aires).

Hosted every three years, the World Petroleum Congress brings together leaders from the global energy sector to cover all aspects of the industry from technological advances in upstream and downstream operations to the role of natural gas and renewables, management of the industry and its social, economic and environmental impact.

It is expected that the World Petroleum Congress will bring more than 5,000 delegates from more than 80 countries to Calgary and is anticipated to boost economic activity by $65 million.

“What a shot in the arm for the Canadian energy sector,” said Naheed Nenshi in a video on Twitter announcing the win from St. Petersburg, Russia. “Calgary remains a global epicentre for the world oil and gas industry and here’s a chance to showcase our innovation, our environmental stewardship and our sustainability.”
