Alberta’s workforce has been faced with significant challenges the past few years.  Some of the highest rates of displacement were experienced among mid-career workers in highly-skilled occupations from the energy sector, including petroleum engineers, electrical engineers, chemical engineers and geoscientists.  With their highly-specialized skillsets, it’s been hard for many of these workers to re-engage in the workforce.

Displaced mid-career energy professionals in Calgary will have access to tech/digital training in Calgary through an almost $1.5 million investment from The Future Skills Centre for the EDGE UP (Energy to Digital Growth Education and Upskilling Project) in 2020.  EDGE UP is a partnership driven, short-duration skills development project led by Calgary Economic Development and a consortium of partners that includes: Information and Communications Council of Canada, the University of Calgary Continuing EducationSAITBow Valley College, and Riipen.  The funding for EDGE UP was one of several initiatives recently announced by Future Skills Centre – Centre des Compétences futures (FSC-CCF) .

EDGE UP was designed to provide short term digital skills training to help these individuals transition into high-demand, high-growth technology opportunities as IT Project Managers, Data Analysts, or Software/Full Stack Developers.  Training pathways will be identified for each participant based on validated skills-mapping data.  Selected participants will be provided a ‘Transitioning to Digital/Tech’ course, Digital/Tech Skills Training and an Industry Assignment.

From the recent report - Mapping Calgary’s Digital Future, produced by ICTC Canada and Calgary Economic Development, findings showed that many of the displaced energy workers possess at least half of the necessary skills to transition in to demand tech roles.  The key findings, demonstrated that much of the upskilling in these roles can be delivered through short-duration skills training:  

  • The average geoscientist has nearly 60 per cent of the core skills and competencies needed to become a data analyst.
  • The average engineering manager has about half of the necessary skills to transition into Project Manager roles
  • The average electrical engineer has more than half of the necessary skills to transition into a software developer role, the most in-demand job in the Calgary Tech sector.

With digital technology scaling quickly in the city, participating digital-based employers who are experiencing digital skills and labour shortages will benefit by being introduced to a new talent pool that comes with extensive experience, transferable and complementary skill-sets as well as a new set of business and technical competencies and workplace readiness training.
